What We’re Cooking: Tomatoes!
Bright red, juicy, and sweet—what’s not to love about tomatoes? We at ChopChop can’t get enough! Check out these fun facts about the tasty treat:
- Because tomatoes have seeds and grow from flowering plants, they are classed as a fruit, not a vegetable!
- Almost all tomatoes are red, but other colors are possible including green, yellow, orange, pink, brown, black, purple and even striped!
- Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that is good for the heart and effective against certain cancers! They’re also packed with vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium.
- You can get fresh tomatoes all year from growers like Backyard Farms. All Backyard Farms tomatoes are non-GMO and hydroponically grown in a 42-acre greenhouse in Madison, Maine, where they are left on the vine until fully ripe!
Summer may be over, but you may still have plenty of tomatoes left to use! Try out some of our delicious tomato recipes including Tomato Soup with Cheddar Cheese, Eggplant Tomato Ratatouille, and Greek Salad Kebobs.
