MEET OUR KIDS ADVISORY BOARD: Hannah

We’re excited to introduce our new ChopChop Kids Advisory Board (KAB). This group of cool kids was hand-selected from kids that applied. They’ll help us to test recipes, think of new ideas for the magazine, and make sure ChopChop gets the kid approval. For the next few weeks, we’ll be spotlighting different members of the board.

This week, meet Hannah. She wants to be an author, a singer, a chef/baker, and a teacher when she grows up.

Name: Hannah

Location: Vermont

Age and Grade: 11 years old and going into 6th grade.

How I got involved with the ChopChop Kids Advisory Board: One of our family friends emailed my mom with a link to the application saying how I might enjoy being on the board. I got really excited and decided to apply.

Who taught you how to cook? My dad and mom both cook. I think I just caught on. I would always help with measuring the ingredients and picking out what to make. They still teach me techniques on how to cook.

What is something all kids should learn to cook? I think all kids should learn to cook eggs and pasta. Both are very easy, but are very fun to experiment with. Eggs are fun because there are so many ways to prepare them. Pasta is also good because it is an easy meal and you can put anything on it.

Have you ever messed up a recipe?Once a couple years ago, I messed up a recipe by putting way to much salt in it. It was so salty, it tasted sweet. Another time my sister and I were trying to make chicken noodle soup without a recipe and we put mint extract in it thinking it would taste good, but it tasted so awful we had to throw it out. It was a mess.

Do you have any advice for kids just learning to cook and who may be nervous? Cooking can be a bit scary. Especially with knives and heat. You can burn your fingers or cut your hand. But once you get the hang of cooking and baking, it is fun. You’re not scared about it.

My favorite food is: Mac n’ cheese. I love cheese, really. I also like chocolate banana cake or cupcakes.

If I was a vegetable or fruit I would be: An apricot. I just tried fresh apricots for the first time recently and they are so smooth and juicy.

What I love about ChopChop is: I love ChopChop because they are such a cool magazine. Their magazine gives such cool recipes and games. They also have great cooking clubs and classes for kids who want to cook.

My secret ingredient is: Maple syrup. We have so much maple syrup up here in Vermont that we even put it in coffee. My dad put maple syrup in caramelized onions and in bbq sauces.

Some of my hobbies are: singing, writing, dancing, and cooking.

A fun fact about me is: I have a small farm. We get fresh eggs from our chickens, wool from our sheep, and our barn cats eat the mice. Here is the camp my mom is running this summer that gives back to insecure folks in our community! Here is an article the I wrote for the local newspaper about another camp my mom did last year in our school garden.
