Kids’ Share Week 8: Winter Vegetables

This week, we picked up our eighth Kids’ Share.  We have been cooking from the weekly share from Siena Farms for 2 months, and it has been a blast!  This week’s share contained some great seasonal vegetables: Honeynut Squash, Butternut Squash, Tuscan Kale, Onion, Rainbow Carrots, Apples, and Chives.  The weekly surprise was a metal serving spoon along with a ChopChop word search!

What is the difference between Honeynut and Butternut Squash?  Honeynut Squash is a mini-Butternut Squash that grows on a compact space-saving bush type plant. This mini-squash has a sweet and deep rich flavor in its burnt orange flesh.

Since winter is right around the corner (or at least it feels that way!), we decided to make a yummy seasonal soup with this week’s share.  “This soup was super easy to make—and tasty!  I decided to roast the squash, garlic and apples in the oven before adding them to the soup.  It added extra flavor and was delicious!” said Abby.
