Toasty Blueberry Smoothie

Toasty, creamy, and tangy — this protein-rich shake tastes a lot like cheesecake! But, unlike most desserts, it’s full of ingredients that will give you lots of energy for your day.

Kitchen Gear

Measuring cup 
Measuring spoons 
Grater or zester (adult needed)
Citrus squeezer (if you have one) 
Blender (adult needed)


1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries (plus 2 ice cubes )
1 cup milk or plain yogurt or a combination
1⁄4 cup toasted pecans (to toast the pecans, put them on a small baking sheet in a 350-degree oven until they are fragrant and look a shade darker, about five minutes)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  Juice and grated zest of 1/2 lemon
2 dates (pitted)


Wash your hands with soap and water, then gather all your equipment and ingredients and put them on a counter.

  1. Put all the ingredients in the blender.
  2. Put the top on tightly. Turn the blender to a medium setting and blend until the mixture is smooth, about 1 minute.
  3. Serve right away — or store in a thermos or covered in the refrigerator, up to 4 hours.

* If you’re allergic to nuts, substitute 1⁄4 cup toasted wheat germ, oats, or sunflower seeds for the pecans.
