KITCHEN GEAR

Measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Shallow metal pan
Spoon
Fork

INGREDIENTS

3 cup grapefruit juice
1⁄4 cup maple syrup, honey, or brown sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

Wash your hands with soap and water, then gather all your equipment and ingredients and put them on a counter.

  1. Put all the ingredients in the pan and mix until combined. Carefully put the pan in the freezer.
  2. Using the fork, stir every 15 minutes until frozen, about 2 hours. Serve right away.

OR ELSE

We love the zippy flavor of grapefruit in this recipe, but you can use orange or apple juice if you prefer — and you’ll probably need less sweetener.

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

We’re calling this “slush,” but it’s really the same recipe as an Italian dessert: granita. The word “granita” shares the same root as “granular,” because the frozen dessert has a grainy texture.
