Ingredients

1 cup berries, fresh or frozen
4 cups plain seltzer
4 lemon slices

Instructions

Wash your hands with soap and water, then gather all your equipment and ingredients and put them on a counter.

  1. Put the berries in a bowl and using your fork or potato masher, break them up until they are mushy – with no whole pieces left.
  2. Divide the berry-mash between 4 glasses and top each with 1 cup seltzer. Add a lemon slice if you want to be fancy.

American Indians called strawberries "heart-seed berries" and pounded them into their traditional corn-meal bread. Colonists turned the recipe into strawberry shortcake!
