WHAT IS IT?
The Eatable Alphabet is a deck of twenty-six educational cards, developed collaboratively with the American Academy of Pediatrics and with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC).
Parents and caregivers can use Eatable Alphabet to promote early nutrition awareness, sensory experience, and literacy across a range of subjects that include food, language, math, and numbers.
· The front of each spill-proof, two-sided 5 x 7-inch card features a letter, the name of a fruit or vegetable, and its Spanish translation.
· The back of the card features different categories of engagement that combine food learning and simple recipes with hands-on exploration, sensory prompts, movement, and problem-solving.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The Eatable Alphabet reaches the youngest possible audience with our message that cooking nutritious food is fun and fosters healthy experiences and valuable life skills. In addition to the more conventional types of literacy—language and number, as well as social and emotional–we are introducing children to nutritional literacy: the lifelong skill of knowing how to feed oneself in a healthy and sustainable way. Additionally, the cards help cultivate strong pre-reading skills and lay the foundations of literacy, as well as sparking an interest in math. Caregivers and parents also benefit: The deck offers them a portable, accessible way to engage and educate the children in their care, and to cultivate bonding experiences.
